- RaymonExplorerI once had my black tank on my fiver plug up when I went to use a rest area dump station. A couple guys at the dump station suggested that I use the ice method to break free my blockage. I proceeded to a convenience store and bought a couple off bags of ice. Dumped the ice in the black tank and headed down the road. Went maybe 50 miles or so. Found another dump station and the tank emptied with no problems.
Since I had never heard of the ice solution, of course I was skeptical. All I can say is it worked for me and I certainly would try it again if need be.
I think this guy's trial failed because there was no water in the tank when he first placed the ice in the tank. The ice needs to be able to slosh around in order to work.

If you dump in two bags of cubes and they all they do is fill the 3' drain pipe won't do too much tank scrubbing. - FunnyCamperExplorer IIwe used cubes and I think it does help scrap the tank a bit more. nothing stellar but we will keep doing it from time to time on trips.
WHEN WE HAVE tons of leftover ice cubes from the coolers. we don't buy ice just for this. - amandasgrammaExplorerAnother question....and possibly starting another "discussion".....what brand toilet paper did he use??/

Depends on the drink. - JohnG3Explorer IIOK, I watched the video and this guy is all wet. When I first saw this cleaning solution it was simply to clean the tank leven sensors, not to sanitize the entire black tank. My senors read full all the time. So my responses:
1) he had a small homemade tank with stuff he made that may or may not accurately resemble the stuff in a black tank (except for the toilet paper).
2) he started out with just the ice cubes and a little water. As the ice melted it became more mobile and cleaned a bit more.
3) with the tank above the rear axle of his truck the movement of the tank is no where near that of a black tank in a trailer.
When I tried this I used 21 pounds of ice in about 10 gallons of water and drove on a curvy,up and down mountain road for a couple hours (at reasonable speed for the road and conditions and not like an crazy man). When I got home and dumped the tank level sensors worked like new. - korbeExplorerIce cubes have worked for me. Not in trying to break up a pyramid, but in cleaning the tank a bit more while heading home after a dump.
- JohnG3Explorer IIWorked for me the first time I tried it. If you try this on a straight road it will not work. Has to be on a road with lots of curves.
