Idling while being towed

I remember reading back when I 1st got into our motorhome that someone had flat towed a Ford Taurus behind his motorhome with it idling to keep the transmission cooled instead of going with a pump. I wonder if he is still lurking around these threads? I remember a few pros and cons to this application. If you haven't guessed, I'm tired of driving my PT Cruiser every day and I'm looking for an upgrade. Really don't want to go with another manual.

  • I have a PT and I have a pump for automatic towing. Couple years ago the pump went out when we was on a trip and I could not find anyone to fix it. I drove a couple thousand miles with just the car idling. It worked for me. I still have the same car and no problem.
  • You can do that with any automatic transmission vehicle. If it's a good idea is another question, but it won't hurt the vehicle any. Unless it overheats or stalls or runs out of gas... You get the potential downside.
