If people didn't have unfounded fear they wouldn't want to carry firearms.
I'm amazed that it took 185 posts to bring guns into this thread. I give it another 5 or so before it goes bye-bye. To phrase and paraphrase Dylan Thomas: "Do not go gentle into that good night", and pack heat. :R And no, I'm not a gun advocate.
To remain on topic: If you feel the need to "secure your perimeter" with lights, sounds, animals, noxious odors (you know who you are) or firearms, the original premise of this thread remains intact - just don't go there.
Actually, since we are at 19 pages, chances are everything that needs to be said has been said, so closing the thread would be no great loss; it will still be here to be referred to for quite a while.
Lights, sounds, noxious odors, dogs, etc. probably won't bother bears, feral cats (cougars, bobcats, lynx, etc.) or wild dogs (wolves, coyotes). THAT is what the firearm is for, if needed. The neighbors won't know whether I have one or not, until it IS needed!
Of course, the BIGGEST concern is that those critters CAN carry rabies, or the ticks that carry Lyme Disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever! THAT is a justifiable fear! Even rabbits are dangerous: Look up Tularemia.
There's nasty things in them thar woods! Be prepared and be careful!
