As a police officer, you're probably very aware that too often the parents come to the defense of their misbehaving kids. And, there is a huge difference between kids being kids and kids crossing the line. As a retired teacher, I am very aware that problem kids are most often the result of problem parents. My perspective is that, if I confront a misbehaving kid, am I willing to deal with the parent, many of whom have have been drinking? And am I willing to chance acts of vandalism by the child or the parent? We go out of our way to avoid being in places at the times most likely to be visited by crazies, but as full-timers, that isn't always that easy. On the other hand, I have a very hard time ignoring inappropriate behavior on the part of anyone. If I really have to get involved . . . I do.
