Ya, I wouldn't say inaccurate, rather you don't know what spec or convention is being quoted.
My v nose Sno machine trailer, typical to the industry is listed as a 28'. Previous one was a 12'. Overall length of the trailer is more like 34' from the hitch coupler to the back door.
Convention is the "length" is the length of the rectangle part of the box. The vee and hitch length are in addition to that. Is it inaccurate? No.
Some way want to know what they can fit inside, full width, others want to know length tip to tail maybe because of available storage length.
