Amish are not Jewish, which means they are gentiles. They usually refer to non-Amish as "English."
I've been called English by the Amish carriage builder my wife and I hired to build a carriage for us. What he also didn't realize is that the language they speak is very close to German so when I replied to him in German he was surprised. And then when I showed him how to bleed the hydraulic brakes on the carriage he built he even learned a thing or two from me. We started out on not so good terms (he didn't want to build a white vis a vis carriage for weddings) but he was the best at building carriages. After the carriage was finished we both had learned something from each other. I came to appreciate the simpler way of life they lead even if it is much more labor intensive and we've been in touch with each other over the years. Even over the phone which is hidden in the barn.
