Just got back from a couple of weeks in Lancaster, PA - another big Amish area. There are many different sub-groups, each with their own specifics as to what may or may not be used. Interesting to see horses being used in the fields, while a nice John Deere was in the yard...but only for lifting and pulling, not field work. Most have electricity - but generator or solar, never hooked up to the grid.
Some use push mowers only for their yards, some use gas. It's all about deciding what defines their group as a community apart, and not so much a rigid set of rules that never change. It is striking to see a horse and wagon combo at the gas station loading up with 5 gal jugs of gas....
