Inflating tires 10lbs over?

Sorry to do this, as I am sure it has been discussed a lot - but my searches came up dry...

So there was advice floating around on a past boat forum that properly inflated ST tires were rated for a max speed of 65 mph. For speeds higher, then the official word supposedly was to inflate by 10 lbs higher.
I see in an issue of Trailer Life that the same kind of advice was given. For my fifth, I did not see any inflation sticker, so I have always been inflating to the max on the sidewall. But, if I am going to be towing in the 65-70 mph range, should I be going 10 lbs over that? Or is the sidewall pressure the "never exceed" amount?

  • Here is what Goodyear has to say about it concerning their trailer use only tires.........LINK
Yes they state 10PSI increase to facilitate going above the 65 mph speed rating

Personally.....65 mph is fast enough when towing.

And if one is really concerned about driving faster......buy better quality higher rated tries to begin with

While the tire pressure is for load, Max Speed rating is not an opinion. It's clearly stamped into the sidewall of ST tires. Blowouts occur because of under inflation and/or heating up the tires because of running them over their speed rating.
  • Pony up for LT tires would be my advice if you intend to use the STs beyond their spec. Overfilling is just a bad ideas IMO.

Probably not best towing at those speeds especially with a 1/2 ton as your TV.
  • Max tire pressure is for the Load, it has nothing to do with Speed. IMHO
  • Advice to drive faster than recommended and using higher pressure than recommended? Doesn't at all sound like good ideas.
