Information Discussion for Gate Guards

One of the reasons we are seeing more rigs drilling here(Eagleford) is because they are shuting down gas drilling in LA and bringing the rigs here to drill for oil. There are lots of new drilling pads being set up. I know that Conoco/Phillips is bringing more rigs in as fast as they can get them. GGS lost all their C/P gates except two I have heard.

Yesterdays San Antonio Newpaper had an article about Chesapeake Oil cutting back nearly 50% in their gas drilling and I think it was Phillips Oil (not sure) were quoted as saying they were cutting back. Price of NG has gone from $13+ down to less than $3!!!
So that may be some of the changes in demand. Like I said before, these times do change!

I think gate guarding has become the new way to make an income in this economy as many locals have now gotten into the business. I wish now that we had done this prior to us visiting family instead of wanting to do this on the back end of our visit.

Hopefully I can make the next luncheon.

Maybe GGS, is getting ready for the Winter Texans that leave in 2 months. There will be a shortage of guards by the end of April.
We have been with them since 9/2010 i don't know if they keep the older guards working, before putting on newbies. There were not this many guards last year. It is just now getting crowded. I would think if you stayed throught out the summer months you will have a place with them. I just have to go home and spend some time with my family & friends. Gate Guard people are my new friends. I do agree with everyone's concerns and opinions. Yes there are 2 sides to everything, but if you just paid 30.00 to stay at an rv park while waiting and were told and hour later we need you this afternoon, it is your lost (moneywise) not theirs. I know of 2 people waiting to be placed who voiced their concerns and wants, because of this they were sent to carizo springs to wait. I also understand in this business it would be hard to plan but a little organization as to first come, first serve would be nice or right now we have a list of potentials so it could be several weeks before you are placed. This is only common courteous, no one likes to be lead on.

on another note, I have appreciated all the input and feedback on this site as to the number of people waiting, as well as opinions on other companies. This information has helped myself and others to decide whether or not we want to continue to sit and be idle or move on. remember, if you are sitting at their gates you are at their mercy and need to be available promptly, therefore you cannot be visiting family & friends a couple of hours away or overnight.

I have to agree there are two sides: My 2cw is that GGS or any other company DOES NOT know the exact date that a GATE will be manned. They may have an idea or know that some are coming up...but they can not in most cases tell you for sure that on such and such a day be it a couple of days or a week in advance. We have been called and asked to be there that afternoon. Was this because they just wanted to see how quick we were? No...was it poor planning...maybe but probably by the leasing companing vs the GG Company. If they knew ahead of time they would schedule but as stated their notice is very often....we need someone yesterday...but did not tell anyone until today.

When you are relieved of a gate .... you are lucky to have a day or more notice or maybe sometimes a week or so depending on how everything goes.

If you have been on a gate you realize that they may have scheduled the fracking for Jan 3rd and on the 2nd they say it will be another 2 weeks away. We even had them pull all the tanks and equipment out when it was 80% ready to frac. So do not expect "normal" operating hours and schedules to fit this job.
Flexibility is an asset that one should have. You may think that the rig will be torn down and moved on such and such a day...then it is a couple days earlier or maybe a week later. Should I get on my Managers case for this?

Sitting on a pad out in the middle of nowhere, I am no way qualified to guess what is going on in a corporate guard office in Corpus or Richardson. Much less tel them how to conduct their business.

I am also dis-inclined to even get involved. It smacks of gossipy interference to me and has already generated some negative comments.... which are going to mar an otherwise cordial thread.

Just remember, there are 2 sides to every GRIPE and CRITICISM.

Did you read my synopsis of the situation at Whitsett yesterday? Betsy just came by there and there are only 4 rigs setting waiting and 2 of those are newbies who arrived yesterday and have not even started their paper work.
