Injector cleaning general question

I have used injector cleaners on gas engines and it seems to improve things a little bit but not a whole lot.

Specifically, should I use a cleaner on my diesel engine and do they actually make such a thing. If not, what could I expect if I used a standard gas engine injector cleaner in a diesel? I think the active ingredient is naptha.

  • Buying clean diesel is the key and Chevron is a good source for gas or diesel. Its worked for me over 40 years.
  • X1 on the common tank issue. Here in the People's Republic of California, the state mandates by law the composition of our gasoline. All the refineries put gas in common tanks and all trucks draw from those tanks.

The gasoline companies are free to propagandize about how their brand is superior, but I have never seen any independent proof of those claims.
  • MitchF150, hate to burst your bubble about 1 fuel brand being better then another. At least in our area you can go down to the local refinery and see 20 different gas company tankers filling up at the same fuel rack, drawing the same fuel from the same storage tank as all the rest.
  • No diesel injector cleaner needed. Waste of money and dosed improperly, could harm your engine.
  • Todays fuel is really terrible..point blank. Yes yes... YOU DO NEED AN INJECTOR CLEANER. after much research, i have found and use shaeffers diesel fuel treatment for an injector cleaner and pump/injector lubricity.. very important. Just a fact

Well I have had my 01 for the last 36,000 currently at 270,000 miles. I don't use a cleaner, I use a lubricity additive, with 3,000# psi at the injectors, I really don't think it is needed. Newer diesels run much higher injector pressures.
  • Yes they make injector cleaners for diesels I use one every other oil change. Does it work????? Yeah that's the questions isn't it. I think it's kind of like sprinkling salt on your lawn to keep the elephants off. The guy says the nearest elephants are over 8000 miles away. The other guy says Works good don't it. With that said I have never had a bad injector??? Who knows.
  • Can't comment on the diesel additives, but for gas engines, if you buy 'top tier gas' in the first place, you don't need to add anything... ;)

I drove my 97 F150 with a 5.4 in it for 13 years and never put a drop of fuel additive in it.. It had over 255,000 miles on it when I traded it in.. Hated to do it, but had no choice as there was no way for me to keep it and the 13 F150 too..

Never had a single injector/fuel issue in all the time I owned it. Come to think about it, never had any issues with the truck at all..:)

Always got gas from Texaco, Shell, Chevron, 76... Sure, I paid a bit more than the Safeway, Walmart, Mobil, etc stations, but I got a lot of carefree miles with the 97 and will continue to do the same with the 13.. :)

Just my experience with it.. No scientific proof what so ever...
