There is a heck of a big difference between a person doing something anyway they want versus someone telling them it's not required by code when they have no idea what that person's codes say.
Look at it this way, there is nothing wrong with telling people you drive 95 mph on I-10 all the time and never got a ticket compared to telling that person it's legal to drive 95 mph on I-10.
