We are driving a 21 yr old Cherokee with the straight 6 engine. Very reliable. We have approx 217,000 miles and we wouldn't hesitate to jump in it and drive on an extended trip ( we do 2X per year). We have had only a couple of minor repairs since we bought it 4 yrs ago. We would highly recommend a jeep if the build quality is anything like in the older ones. And - it still looks good!
We have a 1998 Grand Cherokee with the same straight six and well over 200,000 miles on it, too, that we bought in 2001. It makes 100 mile trips a couple of times a week at freeway speeds without a problem. When we bought it, a friend who owns a fleet servicing company told us that it was one of the best engines made. Every time I think about getting a new car, I look at what the payments are going to be and figure that for the cost of a month's payment I can fix anything that's wrong with it.
And that's not even our oldest Jeep. We also drive a 1986 with 250,000 miles on it as a daily around town vehicle. It's a Cherokee with a four cylinder.
