The Jeep diesel now is an entirely different engine than anything before. The Liberty diesel of quite a few years ago was a Renault diesel and indeed caused lots of problems. The Grand Cherokees with diesels (and very few were made) were Daimler-Chrysler products, and use either the I5 2.7L diesel, or later on, the 3.0L V6, both Mercedes engines (and transmsissions) same as used in Sprinters.
Chrysler is now owned by Fiat, and I suspect the new GC diesel is the same one used in the Ram 1500 trucks as an option, and also the ProMaster van. It is an Italian made engine, a variant of a very reliable Marine diesel.
