You’re taking too narrow a view on the housing crash.
It affected thousands upon thousands. Everybody who had anything to do with housing from lumberjack to drywall installer was suddenly out of work. Put that on top of some pre existing personal crisis and a lot of people suffered, especially the ones over 55.
