Wow! Did not anticipate this kind of response nor diversity of opinions. It's scary how divided our country is on just about every issue.
(PS - I tried to search the forum with various terms to see if this was already covered but all came back empty. Appologies for covering an old subject)
Perhaps a third of the replies have been "it depends", or "would let a child or woman" implying would not let a man. This approach seems to have the biggest pitfall. Once you let one in, then you stand in judgment of the 200 in line. What possible reason could you give to anyone you turn down after they've seen you let others in? If you let one in, you have to be ready to let all in. That's the very problem here. If you were situated where you could extend courtesy to one or two without everyone else seeing it, that is very different from being in a straight line with 2-3 lanes of vehicles watching for maybe half a mile back.
As someone said, the guy that looks like an axe-murderer may be one of God's angels, but the elderly white-haired grandmother may be the real axe-murderer. And I hadn't even considered the liability question at all.
And as others mentioned, this is going to generate disagreement with the wife. She will want to be accommodating, especially to women and kids, and I'm the conspiracy theorist ever on the lookout for government drones, secret agents, ulterior motives, and scams.
It comes down to self preservation. I really hope we're not faced with this one.
