I do something similar with my 2KW Honda generator...
It sits secured in the tail gate corner of my covered and locked truck bed cover. I have the FOLD-A-COVER hard plastic folding panels on my truck bed...
Normally I just pull it out onto the tail gate to run my off-road trailer shore power connection.
When it is raining or bad weather I just leave it under the folding panel covers with the tailgate dropped... Never had any issues...
