From handling trailersof approx equal size, dual and singles..... The singles do turn quicker backing, and track inside following more than tandems. Due to the tandems second axle scrubbing slowing the trailer down turning in either direction.
A single I have found needs a bit more HW than an equal weight tandem to tow in a nicer way....
You might be able to get a single with a solo 6K axle, vs say two 3K axles. You would then have literally 300-400 lbs more payload, as you do not have the tare weight of the 2nd axel.
Yes, you should be able to order, or aftermarket brakes on a single trailer. I did this to a Single 3500 lbs trailer I had.
With this all in mind....not going to say which is better per say, only both have plus and minus's depending upon where and how you are using the trailer.
