Any trailer that has brake flanges welded to the axle can have brakes added to it. I have helped add brakes to single axle trailers for friends and am considering adding a set to my trailer.
I frequently pull a 3500 pound utility trailer loaded with firewood. I have had to change a tire and it was not a big deal. I carry a low profile hydraulic jack that fits under the spring mount and a 36" breaker bar with the correct sockets for the lugs. I also carry a torque wrench with me because it would be very easy to over tighten lugs with a 36" breaker bar.
