Is it okay to drop my tip out beds at rest stops or Walmart?

We travel all over the United States and Canada and have never seen the need to park anywhere but in a campground. I wondered if campgrounds are intimidating to some or if they are just saving a buck or two. Some of the campgrounds are not the best, but they all have hookups of some sort and it is much quieter than parking lots, rest areas and fuel stations.
