Before I ever leave home, I plan my route, expecting to drive about 300 miles a day which translates to 5 to 6 hours at 50-55 MPH with potty breaks. If I hit the road at 8 AM, that puts me into my next overnight around 3 PM. Late enough for the previous overnighters' departures, and usually early enough before the current night's arrivals. If a stop along the way is a popular destination where I plan to spend more than one night, I make reservations. For long trips, I add a slack day every so often in case of a problem. Its worked so far.
