Mine takes a 1 and 1/16 inch socket. I have a dedicated socket and socket wrench just for the anode rod in my camper. Mine is now over 4 years old and still the original that came with the trailer. I remove (almost) after every trip and drain the water, so mine gets checked quite often.
When I winterized last November, and then again in December on our return from South Carolina in 5 below zero weather, I flushed the tank. When you drain often and flush often, you don't get that white flakey build up from the anode rod deterioration because it gets flushed out often.
