I found this out as well. Plenty of 3 month contracts at $50 an hour. However, the numbers didn't really work out after buying health insurance, at least in Mass.
Plus, you need to go job hunting every 3 months, which means a month of collecting while you network. So you're really only getting that contract money for 9 months a year, but the health insurance and the rest of your bills are due every month. Once your name gets out there, your off periods are shorter.
Bottom line, if you went into this company as a 40 year old, they would offer you the same job with benefits. It's just another form of age bias in tech.
For me at least 35 years of that kind of bull kakka was enough.
