I like "to visit." My grandfathers were experts at it. So are people from Alaska. So are many from Canada. Rural people are the best talkers once you get them going.
We moved to a quiet community 15 years ago. Now I visit with people when I go to the bank. Going to the grocery store I run into friends and chat. I say hello strangers. I wave to people when driving in the valley.
Being friendly and chatting up people is an acquired bunch of skills. My uncle used to call those kind of people "amiable rustics." After years of practice I am one.
