Neither of us can figure out why people driving by themselves are wearing masks.
We do take walks in parks and wildlife refuges an do so sans masks. We think it funny when people twenty or thirty yards away pull up their masks as they approach us as the mear passing someone at multiples of recommended social distancing are a hazard to their health.
There are two very good reasons for wearing a mask while driving at least where we live:
1) As silly as it may seem, it's the law. Similar to using turn signals even when no one is behind you. The number of accidents caused by not using turn signals could be similar to the number of people who have died from the virus for not wearing a mask when they thought no one was around.
2) By everyone wearing a mask outside of their house it sets the example.
There are hundreds of nomad rvers all over Arizona not wearing masks, rvers who are on the road traveling, and many are not in any danger whatsoever. However, what is the message they are sending to others? Well, if they're doing it, we can do it and it must okay.
This is where the breakdown happens and people get sick and die. For me, if it meant saving just one life, it would be worth everyone wearing a mask.
What I have learned during this year is that human lives really don't mean very much until it's one of yours.
As my mother used to say, "when things go south, don't come a cryin' to me, remember, I told you so".
