In just the past week I have read probably 10 comments among different threads all claiming that this site is going downhill, is losing members (or chasing them away)and generally ailing by reason of ...

Well It never occurred to me that this topic was going to generate so many interesting and thoughtful comments. Much more than the usual post. I value this site and it's opportunities for discussion and sharing of information. I would like to see it healthy and strong.
Some things that spring to mind:
First: Anyone who thinks that I am merely trolling or am new here is lacking in both imagination and intelligence. The web is malleable. And NO I have never worked for GSE, any of it's companies or any other RV related company.
Second; It is truly heartening to see for once an intelligent and thoughtful discussion with a minimum of snark and sarcasm.
My take on the comments so far is this: the general consensus seems to be that the problem with the site is Unwelcoming/rudeness, Moderation policies and lastly technology.
These all seem fixable to me.
I think there is a lot of good opinion here, but will it gain an audience at GSE?
So what about solutions? Any suggestions out there?
I'll start: Ditch the Ads that appear. GSE and CW customers pay for this site with their support of those companies and the products we buy.
Allow for a system where posts are moderated by peer pressure first then action by moderators as a last resort.
Change the rules to EMPHASIZE CIVILITY rather than punitive measures.
In my opinion one of the biggest things negatively affecting this site is the proliferation of threads that contain tens or even hundreds of posts of snarky one liners and emojis when all someone did was ask a question. The question may be sophomoric or one that has been asked numerous times but it is this reaction I feel that pushes so many away. Meanwhile on another forum an intelligent discussion has been eliminated (closed) without explanation for reasons that remain a mystery to many.
