- LwiddisExplorer IIAnd all painted in a rustic color to avoid rust. Tell Cheapo to fix it.
- BroncosFanExplorerUmm, anyway, back to the breakaway cable topic.....
- All58ParksExplorerWell, I don't find it horrible, but there is probably a better way to do it. I think if I saw it myself, it wouldn't stand out as specifically unsafe.
- dave17352ExplorerLooks okay to me. The only thing that's important is that it doesn't bind or get caught up when turning. I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work like it is designed if the trailer were to become un attached. I use to have to hook those up all the time and I would do it this way or that way which ever suited my fancy at the time.
- DutchmenSportExplorerI don't see anything particularly unsafe about the way the brake away cable is fastened to the tow vehicle. As long as the brake away cable is slightly shorter than the length of the chains, so if separation occurs the cable reaches maximum length and then pulls the pin in the activation switch, I see noting alarmingly wrong with this set up.
I would not do it this way myself. I try to find a spot completely separate from the actual hitch to fasten mine. I use one of those D-shaped spring loaded key holder style heavy duty hook and latch it through the holes where the safety chains are hooked into. - ScottGNomadI think it wold work fine but it's a little convoluted in its execution.
Now the safety chains connected by those threaded chain links; Those are going to pop if employed. - mowermechExplorerTechnically, the breakaway cable should be attached to the frame of the towing vehicle, not the receiver hitch. there have been instances where the receiver hitch attachment failed, allowing the receiver to depart from the towing vehicle. With the cable attached as pictured, the emergency brake would never actuate in such a scenario.
Realistically, I don't know anybody who does not attach the cable to the receiver.
Including myself.
I think the pictured attachment is entirely adequate.
The length of the cable is another discussion topic, which I won't touch at this time... - dodge_guyExplorer IIYes! It should be fastened to a seperate part of the truck, anything other than the hitch! You don't want it to get hung up on something and accidentally pull the pin and have the hitch pin come out.

Not legal in these here parts either. The whole purpose of the safety cable is to limit to problems from a catastrophic hitch where the trailer separates, there are several scenarios here where the brake would no be actuated and the trailer would be separate from the TV and..... well pity the other people on that road. The cable needs to be connected to a separate piece of the TV, not the hitch in general and esp not the pin, for safety.
