Hmmmmmm .... I worked in a non-unionized industry for over 32 years in which our company (and our competitors) had periodic "shutdowns" to save money whenever the industry was in one of it's down cycles.
Us employees were sent home and we NEVER got paid during these stay-home shutdowns unless we had unused vacation days to cover part/all of the days that we were shut down. The company did not borrow money to keep us on the job and hence keep paying us. If we didn't like these periodic shutdowns with no pay, our option was to quit and try another industry. These shutdowns were not caused by us workers - they were due to factors beyond our control.
It seems to me that our government is now in a "shutdown". Why are the workers going to get back pay when it's over .... regardless of the fact that the shutdown was in no way the fault of the employees? Is this another example of Federal/Government Employees having an easy ride as compared to non-unionized workers in the private sector? I think perhaps it's close to the same work environment and hardships I had to put up with for many years.
