Not everyone would protect them if left to roam freely. In Yellowstone, the geyser/mud pot/hot springs need to be regularly clean out because people throw trash in them - just a very small example - and this happens even though they are managed. Law Enforcement is minimal in the parks. They can't be everywhere!
Correct. The amount of stupidity I witnesses by visitors when I was at Yellowstone in the spring was mind boggling. The rangers must have the patience of Job dealing with these idiots.
Food not being put away, not staying on designated paths, walking up to bison, getting out of a car to get a better look at a bear that was 50 feet away, I saw a lot of idiocy in only a few days.
