I'm thinking about buying a Jeep Wrangler as a towed vehicle behind a motorhome. My first thought was to buy one a few years old to save some money. So I looked up the price for a 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4X4 with automatic transmission and 36,000 miles on NADA. It says the retail price should be $23,000. That seemed high so I wanted to see how much is the same car new. I went to Jeep and priced a new 2018 with 4X4 and automatic transmission: $26,500. That's before any negotiation so I'm thinking I can get a little bit off that price at a dealer; maybe $25,000 out the door. Who would pay $23,000 for the same car 4 years old? What am I missing here?

Nothing. Jeeps are among the select few cars that are in high demand. Instead of spending thst much, unless you really want a Jeep, look instead at an older Suzuki. Sidekicks are pretty cheap, easy to work on, reliable as heck and a lot of fun to drive.

What is the deal on the Sidekick? Can it be towed 4 down WITH automatic transmission? (I'm too old to drive a clutch any more) Does it have 4 wheel drive? Is it pretty good off road? Do they still make it?

Sidekicks were the next generation of cars. Same as the Geo Tracker. Yes the 4X4 can be towed 4 down. Automatic? Not sure, but it should be OK too. Our last Sidekick was a 4door 97 viltage. Other than a front end alignment when we first bought it, we loved the cheap little car. Loved it so much we traded it for a 2007 Grand Vitara. Now, 75K miles later the only thing its needed is a new fuel pump. You might look at a bit newer Vitara or Grand Vitara older than 2006.

The best towed we ever had was a type 1 VW ( 1970 )The next was awn old square back Cherokee jeep. That had more room for stuff and other folks than we ever needed.Now there is only the 2 of us we are towing a 07 Wrangler.I'd be looking for a late model used. 97 and up, it is all condition.. they are what we know as component cars. as long as the body is good every thing else can be replaced.

I never could find a used Jeep for what I considered a reasobable price. Finally bought a new four door wrangler. Checked out two doors but some people who would sometimes ride in the back seat could not manage to get in. Around here every used car dealer has a Jeep on their lot and it is usually gone in a day or two and a different one shows up. I think they keep the car auction houses busy. Anyway went new and I see some late model jeeps priced higher than what I paid.

Yes I have a 2 door Sport. It has auto and hardtop but no electronics outside of a radio. No door locks or power windows. From there is where I make my comparisons.

However it goes places where a CRV has only one option.

We went through the same thing this past summer and finally opted for a 2008 JK Sahara, A/T. Body and interior was immaculate with 69K miles. Bought it for $18K which is pretty much right on Blue Book pricing. One thing to think about, I don't know what type of rig you have that you are planning on towing with, but if it is a smaller class C, really take a look at the weight you can tow. On My Sprinter, it is about 4200 pounds and my 2 dr JK comes in just under that.

NO, But probably around the same price, and Ford or Chevys are a lot better quality than Jeeps, with a lot more powerful motors, better transmissions, so I think it would be worth the wait and see what the new Broncos offer.

Also, Ford gives rebates over $10,000 at the year end sales. The best Jeep offered this year was $500 off. All the Ford trucks have TURBO CHARGED V6's or V8's motors with 6 and 10 speed auto Transmissions.
Jeep has a NONTURBO'ED UNDERPOWERED V6 and a antiquated 5 speed auto transmission.

My 2014 Wrangler is anything but underpowered. The 3.6 Pentastar is 285 HP.

Don't forget you'll be waiting until at least 2019 if not 2020, plus buying the first year of any new model is risky.

About 999999999% of the Jeep JK Pentastar owners are quite happy with the power output of that V-6. It's pretty simple, if one is not happy, don't buy one, it's not rocket science. Apparently Jeep's doing pretty well in the sales department. There's only ZILLIONS of them being towed out there in RV land.

Wow! $38,000 for a 285HP 5 speed auto Jeep with maybe a $500 end of year rebate.
My son bought a 2015 Ford F150 XLT FX4 Ecoboost 3.5 6 speed auto with the 8 inch back up screen option for $38,000. The 2018 Ecoboost V6 375 HP. 470 LB FT. With TEN (not five as Jeeps have) automatic transmissions.
I seen Ford end of year rebates as high as $14,000 at Wade Ford in Atlanta
Enough said!

I've got basically the F150 described. I've been doing the trails (the limited ones I can) at Moab and throughout Colorado with it. After last summer, doing 5 point turns with lines of Wranglers and side x sides behind me, I'm hunting for a Wrangler myself.

Comparing the Jeep to what is offered in an F150 isn't close to reasonable.

Presently I'm thinking of one end of the spectrum or the other. New, or less than $10k. High priced used doesn't make sense to me.
