Jury duty summons while on a long trip

Was called for several courts-martial, but as soon as the defense saw the MI brass, asked if I was Counterintelligence, and when I said yes, bumped me off. They didn't want trained investigators analyzing their defense...

Got my very first civilian jury summons last year. I had fun during the questioning, but of course wasn't picked.

My DH and I get called up each year (Riverside County). One year, I had to have surgery the previous day. I sent them back the notice asking for an extension until (specific date). They are usually quite accommodating.

My son rec'd his while in Navy boot camp. I sent them a letter explaining he was in boot camp. They responded by saying "call this phone number". When I did, they told me he had to send copies of his orders to them. He did and is excused.

Do not respond to a Jury duty summons letter, once you do the courts now know you got the letter and its hard to get off duty..

I know the letter says a fine of a certain amount if you don't respond and call number, that's just a scare tactic to get you to call, no way can they prove you got the letter.

Do Not Respond, the courts send out more letters than needed for jury duty because they know not everyone will respond, the courts can not arrest you for not responding because they can not prove you got the letter unless it was certified..

I circle file all mine and have for years and never a issue..

Wow like BigDaddyHFX I have only got two jury duty notices in my 48 years. I would never give a thought to jury duty when planning a trip unless I already had the notice.

The first time I as excused, my work schedule did not allow me to attend. The second time I joined the pool, must have been over 100 people waiting, but was not picked. That was about 5 years ago. The first was 15 years ago.

Most people I know have never even got a notice. I think I got the second one because I was excused the first time.

I have written letters for my employer to have a staff person excused from jury duty. The letter was accepted.

Heck I use ta get summoned 2 or 3 times a year for local duty and about every year for federal. I got to where I was ignoring em. They finally quit sending to me, ignoring the local that is, not the feds. It's a hoot to serve federal duty. Heck even was selected once to serve on a Federal Grand Jury and that was for a whole year once a month, now that was a pain having to drive the 350 miles round trip each month.

I always received a questionnaire to fill out and return which included my preference or convenient time to serve. As a carpenter I always stated my slow months Jan-Feb-March, guess in which months I was called? We must have had a thoughtful county clerk.

How often does this happen?

Here in Canada I've been only ever recieved 2 jury summons (happily attended and served on 1 jury) and I'm 54 years old. I would never have considered this as something to have to worry about if taking a trip. Like other places we can get deferials if you are out of town when you are supposed to show up for jury duty.

Some of you must be in high crime or litigious areas to be getting multiple jury duty summonses. At 51 years old, I've never been called.
