Just Venting

I had the most awesome trip planned for this year. We were going to leave in Feb and head south and then west and then make a big loop. Well, life happened and we couldn't go. Now my husband is saying maybe in a couple of years.

I know what that means. Never. What is the point of owning an RV and having it sit in your yard. Its not even nice Yard Art.
  • I don't know why I suddenly got so bummed about missing the trip. LOL
I asked hubby if he had some time this fall and that's when he told me he's pretty much scheduled out.
I think your right, I need to just do some small trips.
  • That's why I have a seasonal site! 90% of the hassle is gone and we have 110% of the fun.
  • I hope your life event is resolvable. We hosted for 2 years at a local park with the intention of using it as a resume for when my wife could retire early on our investments and we would see the country. Life happened to me/us. We take trips locally still but are planning another Midwest trip like last year. Im told that the 10 year out look is not in my future and my time is at hand but I will go until I cant anymore. Since 2000, I've had a broken back, stage 4 colon cancer that I beat due to other circumstances, got diabetes, and managed to get a rare disease that concentrates on destroying the the sinus, then other internal major organs and has gotten my kidneys and destroyed my lungs and has had an affect on my left ventricle. I have made up my mind that if life throws me******I'll pick it up and throw it right back at life. Im going to enjoy my time as I want and that is to keep on camping and moving. Good luck with your event.
  • lynne you have some great pictures yes oregon has some great places to camp
  • Life sure does get in the way sometimes! Your title, Just Venting, I was expecting the usual rant about 'nothing' :) but this time I was surprised. You have a right to vent!! I know about cancelled plans. I am trying to get out into Texas and length of drive time and how long I want to stay---it just all isn't adding up to get the trip I want to enjoy. disappointing.

small trips is what I am doing right now. 8 days max is all I can get scheduled around hubbys work, but those 8 days are well worth it to me.
an RV as yard art sucks. I know. I look at my 5ver out there and think--I have to go somewhere!

hang in there and keep planning constantly. maybe one of the trips will pan out and away you go!

You didn't state the full reason why you're not going this winter - at first I thought it might be a medical reason and none of us can count on that, but if it's just because "he's pretty much scheduled out", perhaps that's the problem. Don't schedule....just go with the flow. We rarely make reservations and basically just have a general direction but not set in stone. We just plan from one site to another. When we get there and we enjoy the surroundings we might stay longer. If not, we'll move on. Scheduling gets tiresome...it would be for us, anyway.

Perhaps let him choose a place that interests him. Does he like certain kinds of 'big park' activities? Maybe staying in one place for a couple months would work so he could do some of his favorite activities with like-minded folks. You'd get to know some people well by doing this.

Your blog is wonderful and it seems like you enjoy nature and birding as we do...perhaps volunteering at a Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, national park or state park would be more enjoyable than an RV park. We've done lots of volunteering and love it.

Hopefully you can work this out with hubby...don't give up!
  • There's many ways to make use of, and enjoy, an RV. Big planning and big trips don't have to be the only - or even the main - way.

    For example:

    - We sometimes sleep in ours out in the back yard for a break from the house.

    - We aren't horse people, but we take it to horse shows to watch our daughter and provide a place for her to sleep in between events.

    - We can use ours to stay in during long power outages from winter storms.

    - We sleep in ours when visiting friends because when we can't use their guest bedroom bed due to the DW's bad back.

    - We use our RV to stay in during multi-day volunteer activities in another state.

    - We use our RV during day trips at a friend's private lake on fishing trips.

    - We can (hopefully will never have to) use it for a home in case Mother Nature ever puts us in the middle of the "big one" (CA's huge earthquake due some day).
  • I'm sorry your plans didn't work out. I sympathize. There have been years when we just couldn't take a trip longer than a few days. That's when we discovered the COE that's about 25 min from our house. Like another poster said, when we're out there we are so immersed in the experience that we don't even realize we're so close to home. And if something comes up, we can always go home for a few hours.

If he has no interest in the trip you have planned perhaps you can go with a female friend or relative. I've met several campers/travelers in our travels that were on trips with people other than their spouses... sisters, mothers and daughters, good friends, a retired father and his disabled son etc. For whatever reason, these people seemed to be totally enjoying themselves while their other half stayed at home.

Has he simply lost interest in traveling and camping?
