Well considering you pulled it off topic, was in the welding business for over 42 years, you are a bit off base.
Although I didn't spend all that 42 years under a hood, I knew many that did, and no their heads were not turned to mush. Its a admirable trade, and many do it. Obviously you have never been around a properly setup weld shop.
I have seen a lot of good welders that took pride in their trade, and were very good at it . Its a dying trade, and comments like yours surely have some impact on it.
Good post but welding is not a dying breed. Perhaps technology will prove me wrong in the future but there is a critical need for welders and skilled trades in this country for the foreseeable future. Machinist, welders, instrumentation, automotive technicians, electronics command premium wages and often pay more than college degrees and tuition is not crippling them after graduation. Young people don't seem to see the need for training as were required when we were in the workforce.:)
Poor choice of words of course its not a dying breed, yes IMO we will always need welders, but what I meant is that not many want to weld anymore, much rather sit on a computer.
I retired in 2010, and it was getting harder, and harder to get a certified welder. I would hire some young guy that played around with a mig gun in shop class, and train them in house.
