I've moved several times over the course of my lifetime. I never worried about drivers license or tag on the vehicles until the tags on the vehicle were expiring for that given year. Then I'd change everything to the state I was actually living in. No one ever questioned how long I'd lived there.
I once was stopped by a policeman in North Carolina. I'd lived there over a year and retained my license in Indiana since I used my mothers address which was still a valid address and she still lived there. Well, flying like an idiot on I-40, yup, I got stopped. The policeman took my license and insurance information (all matched for Indiana), and then asked why I was in N.C. I said vacation, and visiting friends in the area. He bought the story, told me to slow down and sent me on my way. I suppose I was nice and he must have liked me. I thanked him for no ticket and promised to slow down. Next day, I started the process to change my license since they had my number then!
In the Army, (of course that's a little different), I retained an Indiana record for years, living in Virginia. Never was questioned.
As you can tell, I've lived in different places, switched everything to other states, but eventually, everything came home to Indiana. Makes me wonder why I changed when I did. I never considered myself a permanent resident anywhere, except Indiana.
