There are 'things' living in those sewer lines.
You are saying the reason some people are afraid to leave their grey valve open is because of a possible air valve malfunction. Your P trap reason will not happen when an RV is in use and the grey valve is open, which is what we are talking about.
BTW: Sewer flies go for the black and breed where "stuff" is accumulating on the wall of the tank. I have read of black tank infestations when people leave the BLACK valve open, not the GREY.
When the gate valve is left open on the grey there is no vacuum created when the water goes down the pipe (no whoosh) so no need for the Air Valve to function or malfunction.
I understand your need for the whoosh and that is why I and others close the grey valve for a day or so prior to using it to wash out the hose after a black whoosh.
