Kiplinger: 13 Reasons You'll Regret An RV In Retirement

Kiplinger: 13 Reasons You'll Regret An RV In Retirement

I saw this article yesterday. There's not much new here. They raise some valid points, but if you can afford an RV and want to travel the country extensively it's probably cheaper than hotels + restaurants (but not by much). Maybe the main plus to living in an RV is you get to take more of your life with you than just what you can pack in an SUV. And if you decide to park it in an RV park to live in it, it's cheaper than an apartment in Dallas.

  • And here I thought we all bought one because we love to travel and sleep in our own bed anywhere!

To put it in a little perspective. We have friends that are retired and have a class C. They had some problems that kept them from using it on their 3 week trip. So they took their car and stayed in hotels. First few days was OK. Then they got tired of carrying their luggage in and out as well as eating out every single day!!! By the time they got back they said they would never do that again.
  • Gee. Next month they'll tell us that a $50K bass boat is more expensive that buying fish at the local market. I can hardly wait for that one.
  • That article doesn't apply to us or perhaps our mindset.

Rving is simply instilled in us, we raised our children rving and at near 60,wife 50 something, still thoroughly enjoyed camping mainly in state parks all over the country.

Never considered the cost but surely not gonna lay on the couch clutching my money. Lol
  • I didn’t read it all...
No mention of the life style, specially in retirement.
If you don’t buy an RV do you simply stay at home on weekends?
Of course not, you go out and spend it elsewhere.
So it’s not about how much it costs but rather how much more than what you would normally spend doing whatever else. Often its not much more.
  • Wait, RVs are expensive? AND require maintenance?

That has to be the worst article I've read in a long time and that's saying something. Anyone new to the RV lifestyle should do some real research and understand the good and the bad to make an informed decision, but that article provided no substance or useful information. Watching the movie RV would be better research than that article... And hopefully everyone knows that the movie is not "real life." Although many of the gags and comedy bits in the movie were at least based on "real" although mostly ancient and no longer applicable truths.
  • They make valid points if all you're thinking about is money. I got into RVing because I liked it, not because of money. I really don't care what it costs.
  • “A trailer that’s hauled behind a truck or SUV is the most affordable way to test-drive RV living.“

No it’s not! Rent an RV to test RV living.
  • I’ve learned to never read an article on the web with numbers in the title. Invariably it’s clickbait, not well researched original content that you may benefit from reading.
