Land Travel To Canada From USA

I may be doing a workamping position this year and be within 20 miles of Canada. Can you direct me to a site that has the information as to the documentation I would need to enter Canada for a several day visit. I also want information on bringing a pet into Canada. If you have experienced a visit as I am describing, I would appreciate knowing what I should expect. I am travelling in a Class C Motorhome and am a USA citizen. THANK YOU!
  • To enter Canada you will need to carry proof of citizenship such as a passport, birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, a U.S. Permanent Resident Card, or a Certificate of Indian Status along with photo identification.

The Canada Border Services Agency's webpage gives you all of the information you need to know about entering Cananda

You also need to come back across the border and you will be playing by different rules. You will need a valid passport or passport card to get back into the United States.

The rules for entering the U.S can be found on the U.S. Custom and Border Protection Service website.

You can get passport information on the U.S. State Department's Passport website.

If you don't think you will need a full passport, I suggest that you get a Passport card. They are good for going back and forth to Canada and Mexico. They only cost a total of $55 dollars, where as a full blown passport cost a total of $165 bucks. The application instructions are on this website.
  • Official info for entry into Canada is at the CBSA site (Can. border services) and answers all your questions with upto date info. Hope you enjoy your visit.
  • Plenty of information on this forum using the search feature. Remember, you will be entering Canada and must abide by their rules, but you also will be re-entering USA and must follow their rules as well. Basically, you will need a passport, have no guns or ammo, no drugs, very limited alcohol and cigarettes, restrictions on certain types of food and animal feed regardless of country of origin, a current rabies certificate for a dog or cat, and preferably a wellness certificate less than 30 days old. Traveling with exotic pets and/or birds will require special considerations.
  • You'll need your US Passport, or your states Enhanced Driver's Licence (if they have one). This is mainly to get back to the USA. For your pets be sure to immunization records. Also there are restriction on what types of food you can take both ways. And no handguns either, long guns yes but you have to register those.
