My first guess would be some kind of rodent but I don't recognize any rodent from you description. The largest squirrels are Fox Squirrels but they are not nearly the size of a possum. Groundhogs (woodchucks) are the right size but don't really resemble your description either. Packrats are much smaller than possums and none of them reside in Michigan.
