Latex Mattress - Anyone have one?

Hi, we just came back from a week long trip and the mattress has got to go. We looked at a latex mattress and I'm looking for feedback from others that already have one. We've always had "standard" coil mattresses in our motor home but this is for our truck camper. We need some head room and It's hard to find a coil mattress only 7" thick. The mattress store is able to cut the latex down from 9" to 7" for us. Anyone have sleep experiences on latex and what are your thoughts?

  • Have you looked at the memory foam? They are similar but are normally rated more comfortable than latex and they come in different thickness. The thicker the firmer. They also can come with a cool jell layer to keep you more comfortable.
  • A lot of latex sold in the bedding/pillow market is now a man made latex. This material does not have the allergy propeties of the natural product and can be pretty equal in quality if you get the good stuff. Remember as well that not everyone is allergic to latex and latex is a touch allergy and not smell.
Latex mattresses have been the bigger seller than coil beds in Europe for years. We are way behind in the bedding market in North America as far as advancements in foam/rubber bedding. Been in the industry for 20 years and always laugh when you see something new here that has been out there for 20 years overseas and we are just catching on. Look at all the Tempur and other foam that has been catching on. It has been around forever but only here for the last 5-10 years and is still a small part of our market but growing.
  • I have a latex allergy also so we stay away from latex.

I have heard from others that latex mattresses tend to make them too hot.

I have various issues, muscle disease, arthiritis and back problems to name a few. We got rid of the mattress in our new trailer. We had one made of 5" foam. It doesn't sound that great compared to the 10"inch that was there but it is perfect for us. It might be worth it to check around and see if there are any small companies in your area that make mattresses especially for RV's like we did.
  • Good lord, a latex mattress; allergies abound

Lots of folks have allergies to latex including me... hope you're not one of us.
