leaf springs?????

im not sure if this is the right section for this question, but the mod section seemed to be all RV questions

my springs on my 1500 ram appear to be shot. my trailer is 5000 or so dry. would I be better off getting some springs for a 2500 or get a set of helper springs? I prefer to keep the money to a minimum in hopes that this is the last year I have this truck

Why do you think the springs are shot?

Even if you are using a weight distribution hitch, your truck probably will have noticeable rear-end sag when the trailer is attached.

With a properly sized and properly adjusted WDH, it is not uncommon for the rear end to be 1.5-2" lower with TT attached and WD activated versus unhitched -- even when the springs are new.

Go to a frame/spring shop. They actually have formula specs for figuring out what is just the best route to go for your truck.

Not a truck but I took my MH to one of those shops. Best thing I ever did. After listening to all the wrong******how to fix my problem from local repair shops.

I went with new leaf springs and they added one leaf. BEST thing I have ever did to a vehicle.

My buddy did that to his little GMC Canyon last year and it made a world of difference. The truck would sag with 100lbs of tongue weight on the hitch.

I drove him to pick it up after they did the job. It looked like a whole new truck. Sat 3" higher in the rear.

IIRC the job was <$200. Lots cheaper than new springs.
  • Are you using a weight distributing hitch? and is it properly set up? I would check that first. with a properly setup WD hitch there should be no sag with a 6200lb loaded TT. that would give you approx. an 800lb tongue weight.
  • Go to a spring place and buy a new set of springs that belong on the truck. That would be the cheapest and give the best ride.
  • The Firestone airbags without the automatic air pump can be a cost effective way to go.

  • Maybe a helper spring and new shocks might be better if you only are going to keep the truck 1 more year.
