If it somehow gathered some moss, there's simple things you can do to restore it and still drink it. And that's 1 oz of bleach per 60 gallons of water. Scale that to your tank. Vinegar and baking soda round out the low cost methods of removing smells, and sweetening the water after it's been stored for a while
Water for humans only needs to be somewhat clean, not perfectly clean. Of course you'd want to have a filter on your drinking water tap.
I generally drain and sanitize the tank once a year.
1/4 cup beach to 15 gallons of water is the generally accepted dose.
