Length

A couple of friends and I were discussing how they measure the length of pull trailer and 5th wheel trailers. Is there a difference? Do you count the tongue on a pull trailer? Do you count the part of a 5th wheel that sticks over the bed of the truck.? My 5th wheel is a 22 model. That is the length of the trailer not counting the upper part that goes over the bed. To me it is a 27 foot trailer, its full length. We were discussing this while talking about there are some National and State parks the limit the length to 28 feet. Then there is the question is my 27 foot trailer 27 feet long if I stick the generator on the back. Do you know the legal definition is?
Thanks

    Manufacturers use all different methods. Recall one I read of that measured from the top inside of the front to the bottom inside of the rear and called that the "length!"

    Maybe they fell asleep in geometry class!
    Or maybe they passed a deceptive sales practices class and wanted customers to think they were getting more for their money. :B

  • King pin/ball hitch to rear bumper.......total length of trailer

    Front wall to rear wall...total length of box (after all trailers are nothing more than shoe boxes)
  • The RV I have is a 2002 Tahoe by Thor Ind Widelite Fifth Wheel Series M-22 RK GL. Nada calls it a 27 footer. It has a rear kitchen. And yes the box part is about 22 foot long. The guy at the RV lot was calling it a 22 foot trailer. They say it weigh 4980 lbs. I will take it to a scale at my work and see how close it really is.
  • Uhh, OP, no dig at you, I've just always found that terminology a little odd. Whatever that says about me :)

    Of course, PUSH trailers are measured differently :)

    According to some people, they are all push, there is no pull. :)
  • its a ????????

    my 2005 Coachmen Cascade 29FKCS

    29 feet plus tongue = 31 feet.. Coachmen said 29 feet total
    FK = Front Kitchen
    C = Cascade Model
    S = Fiberglass Sided.

    and weight on both tags are off by 800 pounds. tags state 7,500 pounds.. trailer empty is 8,300 pounds.

    and Dates of unit

    outside tag is 12/03
    inside tag is 1/04
    Title is 2005... my guess it trailer sat at a dealer for a year.
  • Model numbers do not equate to length on most models .....A few do most mean nothing as far as to length..... Actual length should normally be measured from tip end to bumper. (Tongue / pin to rear bumper)
  • Often manufacturers will use the box length as part of the model number. The official length is listed in the specifications and for a TT will include the tongue. The model number can be anything the manufacturers wants to call it, the model number is not the length.
