While I agree that the middle class does continue to lose ground. I don't think that is the reason for less young people camping. I think there is more competion for those recreational dollars.
And also camping in a tent, with kids is a lot of work. Tarping the tent in the rain, cooking on a coleman stove, drying the kids off. You guys know the drill.
I would bet you could equip a family of 5 to go tent camping for less that 1K. If you bought some new and some used stuff. Not a huge expense. And a 25 bucks or so to camp in a state park again not a huge expense.
Especially when on considers how much people pay for cable TV, or that new car, with all the bells and whistels.
Probably a matter of priorities, My DW and I always thought camping together as a family was of great importance. Both local, and road trips to places like Yellowstone.
We always found the money somehow. In retrospect I think it was a wise choice.
Will always remeber trying to get those junker cars over the rockies, breaking down in Reno, The things we saw and did. Would not trade those memories for ten million dollars
