I assume you mean the middle class makes the same income today as in 1978 as adjusted for inflation, which would mean the cost of living has not increased faster than wages. Tariffs and trade wars cut both ways. Not really sure that someone working at Boeing is going to be happy losing his job making the world's finest jets when China slaps a tariff on US goods and China Airways starts buying from Airbus. All because we put tariffs on rubber ducks so we can produce them in an automated factory in Seattle. It's been tried again and again and the results are always the same. Trade wars lead to depressions and real wars.
