Is it time to insist that a special license be needed for driving/towing larger recreational vehicles.
I once asked a DOT complaint officer why a person renting a GVWR 26,000 (26' box) truck could drive a vehicle with AIR BRAKES without knowing how they work....he said they cannot enforce the requirement on class "C" drivers because federal authority only kicks in on Class "B" and up. Which is why u-haul, etc... register them at 26,000 even though many of them are the same vehicle that commercial companies register at 32,000.
Yes, I know that MOST states only enforce additional licensing requirements on commercial vehicles. This is not an attempted to hash out the old YOU DON"T NEED A SPECIAL LICENSE and GVWR MEAN NOTHING arguments. If you are going to post in that manner, please do NOT.
I am merely wondering how many of you would be in favor of obtaining an additional license to drive/tow your recreational vehicle?
As many know...the average class "A", if it was a commercial vehicle, would require a class B with air brake endorsement. The difference between that "B" and an "A", is a trailer over 10,000. Many of you 5ers are way over 10,000 in the trailer compartment (yes I am aware of the 26,000# rule....and the many arguments concerning whether it is 10,000 AND IF OVER 26,000)
Is SAFETY only a concern for the commercial world? Would it not make sense to enforce these laws across the board? I see a lot of post on here about safety, and how towing at limits is dangerous, etc, etc, etc......tons of questions on CAN I DO THIS....IS THIS SAFE>>>> NOT A DAY GOES BY.
My question is: If knowledge on airbrakes, towing, GVWR's, all that good stuff that commercial drivers must know in order to be licensed, is for the good of the public...How many of you would be willing to undergo, and even endorse, the same requirement for recreational vehicles to ensure greater public safety?
Would you happen to know How many miles do commercial vehicles drive daily ,weekly annually as compared to RVers?
Why then would we need special licence?
Most RVs don't have air brakes but I'm certain those who drive ones already know how to operate it,,
I'd be more concerned about people with physical handicaps ailments driving any vehicle..
