I have a CDL. Got it because I drive fire engines in my volunteer fire department. I don't really see any difference in ability because of the test. I have to pay substantially more money in "fees", more often, than people with standard licenses -- YES, I consider that another form of government taxation! For no real benefit that I see.
Maybe because I already have one, I don't see the big deal. Plenty of drivers who I know have CDLs are idiots on the roads.
Just because I have to pay a lot more money for my license, that doesn't mean I want to make everyone else do it too. Why don't we, shockingly, LOWER the fees?? If it isn't about the money, WHY does the CDL cost more? Because it's another way for the government to get more money.
In talking to truckers, that seems to be their biggest beef - THEY have to pay higher fees and go through more inspections, so EVERYONE should. Rarely, if ever (I don't remember ever), does anyone talk about CDLs being "safer".
