I happen to believe that a plain driver license is far too easy to get- I would start with requiring actually knowing how to drive as a prerequisite to getting a license.
Mass started implementing stricter training requirements to get a license about 7 or 8 years ago. Haven't seen any stats to see if it's helped. Problem is you don't learn how to drive until you actually drive.
It's always bothered me that there's no law to stop a 16 year old kid from getting into his dad's class 8 toter home with 40' toy hauler and heading across the country.
You can't legislate responsible thinking. A few months ago a 16-year-old was behind the wheel of the family car driving to Disney, fell asleep at the wheel, crashed, and killed the rest of his family. Can't say I've heard the same with a 16 yo behind the wheel of a MH. And it's truly no different than handing the keys of a 40 foot Class A to a couple in their 70s whose driving skills may be starting to deteriorate due to age. A special license will never stop accidents from happening. I agree with approach of increasing the availability of training.
