Another thought - all of you saying you don't need it or want it might want to take a look at your own state requirements....I am willing to bet a lot of the "H**** No" responders are in violation of the law right now.
You have to be careful when reading these general articles. ....
There are tons of different requirements under Illinois traffic statutes, but many of them simply do not apply if your motor vehicle, or trailer is actually registered as an RV.
Agree with C-Bears!
Indiana: No special license to drive anything with an "RV" license plate. Motor Home, Converted Van, Bus, Travel Trailer, 5er, are all classified as RVs in Indiana. A pop-up camper is licensed as a "utility trailer". We're all legal with a standard operator's (automobile) drivers license. And that can be found all over the "books" too.
A friend of mine purchased a 1980's style Greyhound commercial passenger bus and converted it into an RV. Same motor, same chassis, same frame, same body. He kept the same windows. Nothing really changed, except the interior. He completely rebuilt it from the ground up. He knew every nut and bolt in that coach. I asked him about his drivers license and he said it was just a normal operator's license. Anyone can drive or tow an RV with a regular auto drivers license. He then took me behind the bus and sure enough, the license plate was labeled, "RV". He was able to get the title and use of the same bus switched from commercial to RV. That did surprise me as I did not own my first camper yet at that time. I followed up on the laws in Indiana and educated myself when we purchased our first camper. I've ALWAYS been 100% legal and take great strides to ensure my rig is 100% safe. So you know what ... we DO know our laws and we are legal!
