I don't think there is much you can do, it is mostly luck as to where it strikes. Amazing power and energy. Once it hits it could go anywhere / split in different directions.
I was hit indirectly once and there is no describing the feeling. A bolt hit a huge pine tree at the corner of my garage. The power split the pine and traveled down till it hit a metal street light I had temp. mounted on the tree. Unfortunately I was in the garage and was using a dremel tool at the time. When it hit the light fixture on the tree it went sideways to the garage. Fire shot out of the end of the dremel tool, blew out my garage door opener, computer, modem, and scared the******out of me. I thought I was a goner. Probably would have if not for the rubber sole shoes. It hit so hard it blew chunks of pine bark off the tree into the garage where I was standing. Point is, you can pick as safe a spot as you can ( and you should ), but when it hits all bets are off, it will go wherever ..... till the energy is expended.
