I think a distinction needs to be made.
If you want to change out a light fixture at home (like for like) do you call an electrician? Or do you change it yourself?
If you have a leaky faucet, do you call the plumber or do you fix it yourself?
If you have a cabinet hinge come loose, do you call a handyman or do you fix it yourself?
If your car taillight goes out, do you take it to the shop or do you replace the bulb yourself?
If you can do these basic things, then you'll be fine. You may spend more money than someone else, but you won't be spending your time working on things you don't enjoy. It's give and take and no one way is right.
The main thing I would say is to learn how to identify a leak and how to seal it. Then check after the first rain of the season and several times there after. That one thing can prevent many of the expensive repairs. And you can't depend on a pro to catch a leak before it rains (or be able to seal it before the next rain).
