Local resources

How do you gather information on the area you are visiting?
I always pick up the local shopper/pennysaver. They are called different things different places, but most communities have one.
We also like fundraiser dinners, invariably one of the natives will be curious about you; and in turn can be pumped for the things of interest that don't show up on the Chambers tourist map.
  • When we came into a new area we made two stops......

The Chamber of Commerce for local info, county road maps and any tips the other place was a local bar. I like sampling local brews and folks are always helpful in where to go, see, eat etc. that are not part of the published guides.
  • I google the area to find local attractions and events. Also craigslist has a community area that lists local news and events. You can find art classes, boat trips, parade info etc on the web.
  • Sometimes the local motels have a section for brochures of local attractions as well.

Another location that has info, strangely enough, is likely the county or city courthouse. When I was in a criminal justice course where part of the class was going on field trips to see how small towns ran their jails, oftentimes one could find a lot of tourist info at those places.
  • The RV park offices often have some good info on local attractions, sometimes including discount coupons. We also make it a point to talk to any long term guests we encounter about the area, including inquiring about shopping and restaurants.

What good ideas! At the fundraisers, I am sure they appreciate your attendance. And you are also sharing good will for all RVers!
